Written and directed by Julie Dash, Daughters of the Dust was the first feature film by an African American woman to receive a general theatrical release in the United States.
Set in 1902 on the Sea Islands off South Carolina, it follows three generations of Gullah women on the eve of their migration north, weaving memory, ancestry and tradition into a visually stunning story told from women’s perspectives.
