Orchestrating Impartiality (American Economic Review, 2000)

Flat minimalist illustration of an open academic journal with a magnifying glass resting on it, plain off-white background, bold graphic style, limited palette of deep red (#B03A32) and black, no people, no readable text, square composition

Economists Claudia Goldin and Cecilia Rouse studied what happened when major US orchestras began auditioning musicians behind a screen, so that judges could hear but not see them.

They found that blind auditions improved women’s chances of advancing and being hired, a classic study on how removing information about gender can reduce bias. Goldin went on to win the 2023 Nobel Prize in economics for her work on women in the labour market.
