Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence (Signs, 1980)

Flat minimalist illustration of an open academic journal with a magnifying glass resting on it, plain off-white background, bold graphic style, limited palette of deep red (#B03A32) and black, no people, no readable text, square composition

Poet and essayist Adrienne Rich argued that heterosexuality is not simply a natural preference but a political institution, enforced through economics, violence, culture and the erasure of lesbian lives from history.

The essay also proposed a “lesbian continuum” of bonds between women, and it remains a foundational text in feminist and queer theory, as well as a source of lively debate.
